The World
Is Not Enough
Can photography change people’s world?
I believe it can.
Photography matters in people’s lives, it creates memories: the kind of memories we often reshape and bend to our own use, altering the magnificent sense they hold in our life.
And so, to my mind, a photographer’s purpose is to create memories that time cannot erase — sensations that keep renewing themselves without losing their meaning or their flavour. Like a modern writer, the photographer uses momentum to create virtual sensations that people turn into real ones.
My life changes
I came to photography as a form of expression in high school, thanks to my art teacher, who taught me the smells of the darkroom and the refinement of printing paper.
For years it stayed exactly that: a passion. An ordinary job like many others, a chair, a computer, the monotony of weeks starting on Monday and ending on Friday, always the same story.
At forty came the decision and the turn: crazy ideas do not always take shape in your youth. One travelling companion, then another, someone gets off and someone else climbs aboard; the making of a place where sensations become frames, a small studio, a new world of people as mad about stories and images as I am.
My stories
What do I tell? People.
No offence to my wonderful colleagues — though I prefer to call them travelling companions — who chase animals and landscapes, objects and things.
I relate better to people: I tell the beauty of them, outside and inside, the movements of a world as ephemeral as fashion and yet strangely real in modern life, the smells and tastes of the day two people join their lives in one chorus, the joy of witnessing the first steps of young cubs, or simply life itself.
This is me
To show people — and my young son — the world as my eyes see it.
This is who I am, exactly at the centre of my own path, curious eyes turned towards this fantastic, brief, intense journey we call life.
